A US official with knowledge of the briefing said the US ambassador in Kabul told staff there that four US Marines were killed in an explosion at the city’s airport and three were injured. On Thursday, there were two explosions in Afghans trying to enter the airport. A US official said that at least three US soldiers were injured.
Witnesses reported that many Afghans were killed, many of them trying to enter the airport because they aided the efforts of the US-led coalition and feared persecution from the Taliban. Western governments have repeatedly warned the Islamic State of impending attacks and urged their citizens not to approach the airport.
After the explosion, the US Embassy told all Americans to leave the airport entrance immediately. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s press secretary, said the explosion at the airport’s monastery gate was the result of a complex attack. He said another explosion occurred near the Baron hotel, near the airport.
A British security official said both attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. When the explosion occurred, an Afghan tried to enter the airport for the fifth time and boarded one of the evacuation planes, he was standing in the crowd in front of the monastery gate. “A lot of people were injured,” he said by phone. “I helped a girl. I think she’s dead.”
