My father Abe, 98, passed away this evening In so many ways—he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained. An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent. We love him & will miss him.
Schumer tweets that his father Abe died at age 98 tonight. Schumer: “In so many ways— he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained.“
Senior Senator Chuck Schumer of New York was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1950. He planned to celebrate this holiday and his birthday with his 98-year-old father Abe at a Long Island hospital.
Schumer, who turned 71 on Tuesday, told reporters at an event in Brooklyn this week that his father had undergone surgery for a heart problem. He is not sure how much time he can spend with Abe-but thank you for at least spending an extra holiday with his old man.
Schumer said that father and son have enjoyed a close relationship throughout their lives. Abe is an exterminator. He and his wife raised three children in Brooklyn. The eldest child is Charles, better known as Chuck.
Schumer tells the family legend of his own birth in the now closed French hospital located on West 30th Street between Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue in Manhattan.
Schumer said: “What they used to do—there was no such spouse in the delivery room, and they felt very sensitive—they sent their husbands to a room, and they paced and smoked cigars, waiting for happy events.”
