The recent events of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga will have catastrophic consequences for the series’ former heroes. The loss of Naruto and Sasuke’s powers establishes the new hierarchy of power at the highest level, but it can also mean changes in the ninja arts. And in one of the few arts that Naruto is not a prodigy: genjutsu.
ATTENTION: BORUTO SPOILER: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS BELOW !!!
Despite being a way to face even the most powerful Otsutsuki in heads-up, Naruto’s Baryon Mode had its consequences.
Unlike other Modes, which were based on joining chakra in some way to use it, the Baryon Mode was a chakra fusion between Naruto and Kurama. Fusion in the nuclear sense of the thing. Because of this, after its use, the Nine-Tailed Fox extinguished the entire chakra itself – which is lethal for a creature made of 100% chakra.
Yes, Kurama died after using the Baryon Mode.
And while many are concerned with the raw part of the Fox’s power, such as the Chakra Cloak or regeneration, another power has also been eliminated: resistance to genjutsu.
Genjutsu is a manipulation of the victim’s chakra. By modifying this chakra that circulates in Organs sensory organs, the user can cause hallucinations or even control the victim’s will.
The ways to fight genjutsu are: a) not to get caught in genjutsu b) temporarily interrupting the flow of chakra, breaking the illusion.
It is possible for the victim to break his own illusion when he realizes he is in one, but it is very difficult at the more advanced levels.
But it is possible for someone else to do this for the victim. And that is one of the great benefits of being a Jinchuuriki: the Tailed Beast itself can interrupt the flow of its vessel.
Because of this relationship, Jinchuuriki are basically immune to genjutsu, since the bijuu can break the illusion instantly, mainly because it is directly connected to the user’s circulatory chakra system.
Breaking genjutsu requires perceptive skill and great intelligence … which we know is not Naruto’s greatest talents.
And now that he is without Kurama to immunize him directly, he is susceptible to enemy genjutsu, right?
Yes, Naruto was never a genius when it came to genjutsu. Before he became a Perfect Jinchuuriki, he fell into several illusory traps, as we could see in his encounter with Itachi Uchiha.
But today’s Naruto is no longer the naïve, stupid young man in the classic series. The Naruto Hokage is a very successful ninja who needed to study hard to light up the rank of leader.
It should not surprise anyone that, in his evolution as a ninja, he has refined his own control against genjutsu. Especially with Kakashi as one of his teachers.
Another important factor is that Naruto has two other tools to prevent being placed under genjutsu: Wise Mode and Shadow Clone.
Sage Mode causes him to gather energy from nature and incorporate it into his own body, creating a senjutsu chakra that very few people can manipulate.
That way, if he is in Sage Mode, only someone who knows how to manipulate senjutsu could manipulate Naruto’s chakra to put him under genjutsu. And, as far as we know, only Mitsuki and possibly Orochimaru can control and feel the senjutsu chakra.
Shadow Clones can be placed in genjutsu, but this does not affect the original user. And since Naruto’s fighting style involves using multiple Clones simultaneously, he can use this to his advantage.
Thus, even though Naruto has lost immunity against genjutsu because he is no longer Kurama’s Jinchuuriki, he still has his own ninja skills to compensate.
