On stage, when he was a member of Bon Jovi, he was one of the best. The strong and active backing vocals on classics like Bad Name! Glad you can be justly honored in 2018 at the RocknRoll Hall of Fame. Go in peace, Alec John Such
One of rock and roll’s most famous bands had a once-in-a-lifetime reunion on Saturday (April 14). Jon Bon Jovi, Tico Torres and David Bryan reunite with former Bon Jovi longtime guitarist Richie Sambora and original bassist Alec John Such at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The original five-man lineup shared the stage for an hour and a half, with each taking turns to speak before performing his four hits with current bassist Hugh McDonald, lead guitarist Phil X and producer John Shanks Rhythm guitar.
“I’ve been writing this speech since I first beat my broom and sang on the steps of my childhood home. In fact, I’ve written it many times in a variety of ways. Sometimes I write acceptance speeches . Other days I write your fucking speeches,” Bon Jovi said with a laugh during his nearly 20-minute speech.
“Time’s up and that’s our weekend theme. Time is the most precious commodity we have. I thank my lucky stars for allowing me to spend time with each of you. Alec, Rich, Hugh, Tico, Big Wei, for you, for us, for all of you!”
Sambora has played with the band for the first time in five years since she abruptly left for “personal reasons” during her “Because We Can” tour in 2013, sparking many rumours about her being fired, and Sambora told Jon he should Hired “The Edge”. An ultimatum was given and Jon simply said “no fight” with Sambora. Sambora had always planned to rejoin the band, but was eventually replaced by Phil X, who was part of the band’s 2011 trek It fills Sambora’s place in 1994. It is also the first public reunion with the band in 24 years since being replaced by MacDonald in 1994.
While it’s nice to see all five members reunited, Sambora told Rolling Stone that a reunion won’t be imminent. “We’ll see. You never say never. That’s for sure, it’s not in any near-term plans. It just isn’t. I really want to put this RSO thing on the ground. I’m happy, “He says.
“We went out for dinner [Friday night]. You know what? You just fell in. Every band has a caste system. Everyone has a job to do. Mine was about ten,” he said with a smile. “composer, co-producer; I’m lead guitarist; I’m rhythm guitarist; I’m backing vocals; It’s about trying to make everyone in the band happy. I’m that kind of person, and I maintain high morals. That’s another job I’ve done: keep Jon happy because he’s nervous; he’s got a lot on his mind stuff, and he did it to himself on purpose… the basics and all that stuff. I mean, I do a lot of charity work myself, but he has to lead the cause at the same time.”
Howard Stern took the band into the Hall of Fame with a hilariously obscene speech that also included disdain for Bob Dylan and the Hall of Fame itself. “Shit, Bob Dylan! Fuck you! That’s music!” Stern said. “Look, that’s a long overdue accolade. I don’t think you can go anywhere in the world and hear a classic Bon Jovi tune somewhere, and it’s unbelievable that they have such a great record.”
