Tulsa, Oklahoma. (NewsNation) – An investigation was underway Thursday after a gunman opened fire at a Tulsa hospital on Wednesday, killing five people, including the suspect in the shooter.

“This afternoon [Wednesday], we received a call about a man with a gun inside the Natalie Building at St. Francis Hospital. This turned into an ‘active shooter situation,'” the Tulsa Police Department said in a Facebook post wrote. “At this point we can confirm that the gunman is dead.”

Tulsa police told a local TV station that the scene at the hospital was “catastrophic.” Police said the attack was not accidental and a city council member believed the gunman was looking for a specific doctor. However, police have not released the exact motive.

Police said the suspect was a black man armed with a rifle and a pistol. Police believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In a small town 50 miles away, police are also investigating reports of a bomb in a house they believe may be related to the case. Police in Muskogee, Oklahoma, said they were notified of the threat by Tulsa law enforcement, but the home was vacated Wednesday night.

Police said most of the shooting took place on the second floor of the building, where gunfire continued when officers entered the building. They added that scenes were “fairly limited” on the second floor section, with some filming taking place at the Orthopaedic Centre.

Police were still present in St. Francis Thursday morning, though not as tense as Wednesday. The hospital has cancelled most of the appointments scheduled until noon on Thursday, and the St. Francis wing, where the shooting took place, has been closed.

Physician Assistant Gannon Gill told The New York Times he guided patients through a maze of examination rooms and corridors, away from the sound of gunfire. He eventually made his way to a nearby parking lot, where he encountered a patient.

Who were the victims of the Texas School Massacre?
The man told Gill that he and his wife met the gunman during the attack, who told the couple to leave because he was not with them.

“You see this stuff on TV or on the news,” Gill told The New York Times, “but you think it’s never going to happen in your workplace.”

Dr. Cliff Robertson, chief executive of the St. Francis Health System, asked for prayers at a news conference Wednesday night.

“We are an organization that believes in the power of prayer, and there is nothing this community can do other than pray for the families, loved ones and victims of this folly,” Robertson said.

Robertson and Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum praised the two first responders for their quick response time at the hospital, which police said was four to five minutes after a 911 call.

“I also want to express our community’s deep appreciation to the diverse range of first responders who have not hesitated to respond to this violence today,” Bynum said.
