Such sad news. The mountain people of EKY, specifically Johnson County, have lost an ambassador. Jim Matney‘s leadership and love for youth sports will never be replaced. Prayers for the family during this difficult time. RIP coach! Gone too soon!
RIP Jim Matney. One of the first coaches I ever met when I first moved to Kentucky. He gave everyone everything he had and did everything to help Johnson Central and the mountain community. He will be sorely missed, and this reporter misses him dearly.
What happened to Jim Matney?
Hundreds of people gathered at Golden Eagle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. However, this is not a typical soccer scene because the community gathered to pray for Johnson Central’s soccer and wrestling coach Jim Matney.
Mattney has been suffering complications from COVID, and after hearing that he must be transferred to another hospital in West Virginia, the community rallied to support the coach.
Current and former players, friends, family and the media showed up in no time to show their support.
“A soccer team and project embodies the characteristics of its leader: tough, strong and competitive, and a team that cannot be underestimated at critical moments. This may be one of the directors of the Johnson Center,” said Justin A. Muss .
On Sunday afternoon, a local pastor prayed for Johnson Center football and wrestling coach Jim Mattney at Eagle Stadium. Coach Mattney suffered complications from COVID-19 and was airlifted to a hospital in West Virginia.
Coach Mattney is the backbone of the community, and this will definitely show up on Sunday. Bell Tower College graduates and soccer players moved to Inez and served as Sheldon Clark’s head coach until he moved to the Johnson Center in 2004. When he led the Golden Eagles 1-9 in 2003 to 7-3 the next season, he immediately sensed Mattney’s presence. Coach Mattney brought Johnson County two state championships, one in 2016 in 2017, another in 2019, in addition to more than 300 victories.
Coach Mattney is also the head wrestling coach at the Johnson Center.
