Gwinnett County, Georgia-A former science teacher in Gwinnett County died of COVID-19.
The family told the Atlanta Journal that Janet Bruce, 50, died on August 12.
Bruce is a physics teacher at Grayson High School. His niece told AJC that she was at the school on July 26 for pre-planning, but that she felt bad two days later. She was hospitalized later that week.
Her husband Christopher is currently hospitalized and battling the virus. She left him, as well as her two sons Dalton and the knight.
His niece declined to reveal whether the family had been vaccinated.
Bruce has taught at the Gwinnett County School for 27 years. For 17 of these years, he taught at Grayson. As a lifelong resident of Gwinnett County, he graduated from Central Gwinnett High School and went on to the University of Georgia.
“Janet is committed to being the backbone of anyone who needs her, both in and out of the classroom,” according to her obituary. “She spends most of her time with hers, her children, whether at church or at school, she can always find her having fun, young and stupid, dancing.”
Currently, there are 782 active cases of COVID-19 among students, teachers, and staff in Gwinnett County Schools. The school district did not specify how many of these cases occurred among teachers.
