A Penn State University study found that school-based mental health screening can help identify depression in students. Researchers at the university’s medical school found that students who participated in a school-based general depression screening were twice as likely to begin treatment for depression.
“Our study was published when more adolescents reported depressive symptoms,” Sehar said in a press release. “From 2008 to 2018, this number increased from 8.3% to 14.4%, an increase of more than 70%. During the pandemic, there was widespread concern about an increase in student depression. Suicide is usually related to mental health conditions, and it is now teenage deaths. The second biggest reason for this.”
