NBC will not broadcast Golden Globes 2022. Will there be awards?

NBC announced that it will not air the Golden Globes in 2022 amid mounting pressure on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, HFPA, by studios, stars and large sectors of the film industry.

This decision calls into question the viability of one of Hollywood’s oldest and most watched awards shows.

In a statement, the network said it believes the HFPA is committed to reform. Proof of this is that it faces possible boycotts from Netflix, Warner Bros. and many actors.

However, a change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we strongly believe that the HFPA needs time to get it right, ”the network said. “As such, NBC will not broadcast the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes its plan, we are hopeful that we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, long the mockery of even the hosts of its own awards, has come under fire after an investigative article published in February by the Los Angeles Times. In it he recounts the organization’s questionable record on diversity, including the current absence of black journalists among its 87 voting members.

NBC expects changes to re-broadcast Golden Globes

The press association pledged to thoroughly reform its organization. Last week he approved a plan to diversify his membership, among other things. But that hasn’t stopped several production studios from threatening to pull out of the Globes.

Last week, Netflix and Amazon Studios said they would cut ties with the association if the association did not quickly enact more drastic reforms.

We do not believe that these proposed new policies, particularly around the size and speed of membership growth, address the HFPA’s systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards on how its members should operate, ”wrote the Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in a letter to the group.

In another letter WarnerMedia said it will stop holding screenings and other events for the HFPA until it makes more substantial changes.

For too long, demands for benefits, special favors and unprofessional requests have been made of our teams and others in the industry, ”WarnerMedia executives said in their letter. “We are sorry that as an industry we have complained, but we have largely tolerated this behavior so far.”

Protests against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have gathered steam in the past six weeks. The film industry, where racial and gender inequality was not controlled for a long time, has become intolerant of the forms of the group, made up mostly of little-known journalists who profit considerably from the annual broadcast.

Hollywood has increasingly abandoned the HFPA. A group of 100 entertainment ad companies have also said they will urge their clients to skip the HFPA functions. Mark Ruffalo, who was awarded this year’s Golden Globe, said that

He can no longer be proud or happy to have received this award. ”

Scarlett Johansson said the HFPA press conferences for her

they meant confronting sexist questions and comments from certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. “

Are the Golden Globes in danger?

On Monday, Deadline Hollywood reported that Tom Cruise returned his three Globes to HFPA headquarters. (A publicist for Cruise did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not immediately comment on NBC’s announcement Monday. Last week, he ratified plans to add at least 20 new members this year “with a specific focus on recruiting black members” and with the goal of increasing membership by 50% over the next 18 months.

For some, that schedule is not aggressive enough. In the coming months, several films potentially competing for awards will premiere at film festivals and other venues. Tina Tchen, President and CEO of Time’s Up, called the HFPA promises “commonplace to decorate shop windows.”

These measures ensure that the current HFPA membership will remain in the majority and that the next Golden Globes will be decided with the same fundamental problems that have existed for years, “said Tchen.

The Globes, produced by dick clark productions, have seen their ratings drop in recent years, but are still among the most-watched awards shows, generally third after the Oscars and Grammys. The 78th edition of the Golden Globes on February 28, attracted 6.9 million viewers, 63% less than in 2020, seen by 18.4 million.
