Kuaron Harvey, 14, and Paris Harvey, 12, were live on Instagram around 2 a.m. Friday when a gun that the younger child was playing with went off and killed her cousin prompting her to then shoot herself.
Two young cousins broadcast live from an apartment in St. Louis as one child shot and killed another before committing suicide in what the family said was a tragic accident.
Police are still investigating Friday’s incident in which a 12-year-old girl, Paris Harvey, shot and killed a 14-year-old boy, Kuaron Harvey, before shooting herself. . Police initially described it as a murder-suicide.
The girl’s grandmother, Susan Dyson, told the St. Louis Post-Post that she saw an Instagram live video made by two cousins at a downtown St. Louis apartment the family rented in March Celebrate birthday.
“It wasn’t them fighting or anything like that,” said Dyson, from the Dallas area. “They played with guns when they shouldn’t. Of course they shouldn’t. I think it just took off. Accidentally dropped.”
The cousins have been together since childhood, the family said. Kuaron’s mother and Paris’ father are siblings.
Before the shooting, Paris and Cullen were alone in the bathroom, shooting video in a mirror. After Cullen was shot, video showed Paris reaching for the gun, possibly accidentally retriggering it, the family said. They said they believed the gun belonged to Kuaron. Two children were shot in the head.
“This is not murder. This is not suicide,” said Shinise Harvey, 35, a mother in Paris. “It was a crazy accident. It happened.”
Harvey said she did not see the video, but the family described it to her. She said the cousins were “trying to be trendy”.
Paris and Kuaron Harvey regularly make videos and pranks together. One of nine children, Paris was a fun seventh grader who loved doing her hair and nails and had a beautiful voice, the family said. They describe Kuaron as a stupid eighth grader who has been able to do backflips for a long time.
