Who do you think will follow Twitter by making an NFT profile picture? If you guessed correctly OnlyF — the NSFW creator monetization platform that, despite making money, bizarrely trying to clean up its image — you win! Until you remember OnlyF is doing NFT profile pictures right now, which means probably no one will win (except at the intersection of people who both love cryptocurrency and want to compensate NSFW creators for their work?).
According to Reuters, the feature has been in development since December. TechCrunch was able to reach OnlyF to confirm the report.
On OnlyF, only NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain are supported and they will be represented by the Ethereum icon. When users click on the NFT profile picture, they will see more information about the digital asset from OpenSea.
Ami Gan, CEO of the newly installed OnlyF, said, “This feature is the first step in exploring the role NFTs can play on our platform.”
Last year, OnlyF all but banned NSFW content from the platform, which would upend creators’ livelihoods — the news comes amid changing Mastercard and Visa regulations. But the company told TechCrunch at the time that OnlyF withdrew the decision “due to assurances from banking partners that OnlyF can support creators of all types.” Still, it’s a wake-up call for OnlyF creators that the platform could pull the rug from them anytime, at the whim of the credit card company.
But the thing is, helping sex workers maintain a steady income isn’t actually a bad use case for cryptocurrencies. A former OnlyF creator, Allie Rae, is now developing WetSpace, a cryptocurrency-centric alternative to OnlyF.
Unlike credit card companies, public blockchains cannot be altered at will to ban the purchase of pornography. However, as we have seen, a centralized listing market with sufficient momentum can reduce access and market activity for certain types of tokens. Of course, crypto also presents hurdles for fans and creators who may not want to venture into this volatile and sometimes scam space. But anyway, by enabling NFT profile pictures, OnlyF may be making a gesture towards the future of cryptocurrencies, which could mean the future of the porn business continues.
Along with Twitter and OnlyF, Reddit also tested the NFT profile picture feature, while YouTube flirted with the idea very publicly.
