When Dawson Creek’s Ryeley Palfi took the stage against two rivals at the start of the Northern Classic in Fort St. John, they were asked to name their ages. The other two answered 41 and 47. At just 15 years old, Palfi is the youngest contestant at the event.
That didn’t stop him from taking home a string of trophies – first place in the Junior Novice Men’s Bodybuilding, Men’s Open Bodybuilding Middleweight and Junior Men’s Classic Physique, and second in the Open Men’s Classic Physique.
“It was fun. Honestly, I didn’t expect to finish second, I mean I met some really good athletes,” he said. “I can’t believe it now, it’s so surreal.”
It’s a good start for the young bodybuilder, who only started lifting weights three years ago, got serious last summer and didn’t find himself eligible for competition until February, as he planned until he 17 years old.
Palfi also said his confidence was boosted when the presiding judge told him his future as a bodybuilder was bright.
Next up for Palfi is the Pro Card qualifying competition in Vancouver on July 7-8.
“It’s an important show,” he said. “Because it’s so close to the show, I think we’re just going to lose weight right now, and the next show might be a little tighter.”
Not far from home, Palfi gathered many family, friends and supporters for his first gig. But not everyone was in the audience. His father Rick Palfi, stepmother Chanelle Pringle and family friend Kristine Fleming all train at Gridiron and compete on Saturday night.
