Perhaps even because it is a story about ninjas and not about samurai, we don’t see so many swords in Naruto. But it is such an iconic weapon in the culture of the entire planet that, on the rare occasions that it appears, the sword is of great importance.
The most interesting thing about Naruto is that a sword is hardly just a slash weapon. For this service there are kunai and shuriken, after all. Whenever a sword appears, it has something special.
For example, we have the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist, where the seven most skilled ninjas in Kirigakure use seven special swords, each with a different power.
The two strongest are Samehada and Hiramekarei.
Samehada is a living sword, which consciously chooses its user. Made of a lot of sharp scales, it tears the skin of its victims while absorbing the chakra.
This chakra, after being absorbed, ends up being used by the swordsman to heal wounds or restore energy. In the case of Kisame, he could literally merge with the sword, becoming a species of man-shark, or hide inside it.
Hiramekarei, on the other hand, has a simpler operation, being able to store large amounts of chakra to be used during swordsman battles.
Another sword that would easily enter the Hall of Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist is Orochimaru’s Kusanagi Blade.
With a cutting ability that until now has only been stopped by the Tailed Beast’s chakra cloak, Kusanagi can still extend its blade indefinitely and can be controlled telepathically.
Although not about samurai, the world of Naruto has a country where the military forces are made up of these warriors instead of the traditional ninja.
The Samurai of Iron Country use the chakra to increase the blade of their swords and increase the cut, in addition to being able to create bursts of chakra that work as long-range attacks.
Still on the theme of chakra swords, we have the very famous Totsuka Blade.
This mystical item, which was held by Itachi Uchiha’s Susanoo, had such incredible powers that even Orochimaru was in search of that blade.
Not only is this weapon a powerful sword, it can remove seals of curse and extract people pierced by it, trapping them in a world of eternal genjutsu.
But none of these items compare to the Nunoboko Sword.
Formed from a Sphere of the Way of Truth, it has the shape of a double helix, just like the DNA of living organisms.
According to Othbito Uchiha, who got this sword after becoming the Ten Tails’ Jinchuuriki, this sacred weapon was used by the Sage of the Six Paths himself to shape the world.
And as such, it could easily destroy you.
The sword’s power, however, appears to be dependent on the user’s own power level. Obito’s Nunoboko Sword ended up partially destroyed by Sasuke’s Susanoo sword enhanced with senjutsu and Kurama’s chakra.
