Vanessa Mai (formerly Wolkenfrei), whose real name is Vanessa Mandekić-Ferber, was born in Aspachi on May 2, 1992, a German singer and performer. Mai occasionally accompanied her father, a musician of Croatian descent, with a tambourine. When she was seven, she was on stage with him.
In 2008, at the age of 15, she participated in the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas as part of the Getting Craz’d dance training. She participated in the competition as the German champion and finally completed the competition.
After graduating from high school, Mai completed her professional training as a media designer. She chose her stage name after the month of her birth.
In the summer of 2012, Heike Wanner, the lead singer of Wolkenfrei, left the team for health reasons. Vanessa Mai was recruited as a singer by Wolkenfrei member Marc Fischer while attending a concert by her father’s band Musik-Express in Sonnenhof, Aspach.
On July 19, 2013, she released her first single Jeans, T-Shirts und Freiheit (French: Jeans, T-shirt and Freedom).
It was followed by her first studio album Endlos verliebt (English: Endless in Love) released in February 2014, which topped the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In January 2015, Mai was announced as the new spokesperson for Mein Herz schlägt Schlager. She promoted it through advertisements and the song Mein Herz schlägt Schlager and released it in a sample album belonging to the project.
In April 2015, Marc Fischer and Stefan Kinski announced that they would be leaving Wolkenfrei, which resulted in the project being represented only by Mai (primarily as Wolkenfrei-Star Vanessa Mai). “Wolke” is the first single from Wolkenfrei’s second studio album, which was released on May 22.
