No one knows the music of the legendary Kenny Rogers better than the musicians who have accompanied him for over 40 years. They know audiences still want to hear all the songs the singer is famous for. To pay tribute to Rogers and his music, they put on a show “Through the Years” to honor a unique artist and keep his voice and songs alive for a new generation.

Not only did they share the music they’ve played with him for so long, they also shared first-hand stories of touring with the gambler. They also shared their unique take on Rogers and the song because they know him and the music best. The band showed these songs as they toured with Kenny Rogers from Carnegie Hall to the Royal Albert Hall, from the Sydney Opera House to the Grand Ole Opry. They’ll play all the hits you’d expect, like “Lady” and “Lucille” as well as some hits that don’t always appear on the usual tour song list. This makes the show especially return to an amazing career.

Singer/songwriter Don Gatlin, who stars on the show, also knows Kenny Rogers very well. When Kenny Rogers recorded “I Won’t Forget,” he dreamed of having a superstar record one of his songs. Kenny was also a fan of Don’s voice and asked Don and his band Savannah Jacks to accompany him on tour. That brought Rodgers 66 gigs.

Gatlin grew up in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where he and his brother Darryl played in Ponderosa Park in Ellsworth as teenagers. They recorded their first album in Nashville in the early 1980s after finishing runner-up at Seagram’s 7 Battle of the Bands nationally. Don also won the 1986 Nashville Network You Can Be a Star. It was an early American Idol-style reality show that landed him a deal with Capitol Records. The brothers later signed to Epic Records under the names Darryl and Don Ellis, and released two albums. As Gatling recalled, their single went nowhere. “We’ve been nominated for Duo of the Year seven times. We’ve lost to Brooks and Dunn seven times.”

After the brothers left Epic, Gatling served as songwriter, co-writing songs with Ricky Van Shelton, Blake Shelton, and others. He formed Savannah Jack in 2003 because he just loved working in a band. They played in Nashville before moving to Las Vegas, where they were regulars in the Sahara desert and tropical gardens.
