Jonathan Aryan Jafari, better known by his internet alias JonTron, is an American YouTuber, comedian, critic, and internet celebrity. He is best known for his eponymous YouTube web series JonTron, in which he reviews and parodies video games, movies, and other media. Jafari is also the co-founder and former co-host of the Let’s Play web series Game Grumps, and the co-founder of the video game entertainment site Normal Boots. As of July 2021, his YouTube channel JonTronShow had 6.6 million subscribers and 1.1 billion views.

Jonathan Aryan Jafari was born on March 24, 1990 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. His mother is of Hungarian descent and his father is of Iranian descent. From 2004 to 2008, he attended Palos Verdes Peninsula High School,[6] where he met YouTubers Jirard “The Completionist” Khalil and Barry Kramer, who was also Game Grumps’ first editor.

Jafari married Charlotte “Bear” Claw; ceremony took place on October 23, 2019.

Jafari created a Newgrounds account called BirdmanXZ6 in 2003 and uploaded five animations depicting anthropomorphic onions. In 2006, he set up a YouTube account under the same name. Jafari uploaded a video to Screwattack.com in 2010, reviewing games like GoldenEye 007, and meeting creator Austin “PeanutButterGamer” Hargrave at ScrewAttack.

On August 31, 2010, Jafari created a YouTube channel called JonTronShow. He explained that he chose the name JonTron because it was “reminiscent of technology,” like the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and that the show would initially be called JonTron 2.0. He then uploaded a two-part review of the Nintendo 64 version of the game Daikatana, the first in his JonTron series.

In each episode of JonTron, Jafari reviews individual games as well as games based on a particular theme, franchise or genre. He is usually accompanied by his green-cheeked parakeet, Jacques, who speaks in a robotic voice. Jafari typically incorporates sketch comedy elements into these episodes to showcase his reaction to the video game under review. According to Jafari in an episode of the online game Grumps, Jacques was originally going to speak in a stereotypical jive voice, with Jafari’s mouth resting on the character’s face instead of red eyes as he spoke.

Jafari has reviewed video game adaptations of popular franchises such as Hercules, Barbie, The Lonely Man and Conan the Barbarian. He also reviewed various unlicensed games, especially those based on the Pokémon franchise as well as Disney movies. In the latter, he noted that China is “farther from U.S. jurisdictions and does a better job of Disney smuggling,” and pointed to unofficial online games based on the company’s films. Jafari also occasionally uploads skits and movie reviews.
