Bilquis Bano Edhi, wife of prominent humanitarian and philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, died Friday at the age of 74 after a brief hospital stay.
Her family had said earlier today that her condition was stable. She spent three days in a hospital in Karachi, where she was taken after a sudden drop in blood pressure. Bilquis has been ill for the past month, according to a spokesman for the Edhi Foundation. “While her condition is not serious, she will remain in hospital for a few more days,” Eddie Foundation spokesman Mohammad Bilal said.
Bilquis suffered from congestive heart failure and had two heart bypass surgeries, Bilal added. During Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s first visit to the port city on Wednesday, First Lady Tehmina Durrani also visited the port.
Earlier, Pakistan’s prominent philanthropist and humanitarian was named the “Person of the Decade” along with UN human rights rapporteur Professor Li Yangxi and American ethicist Stephen Solz.
A spokesperson for the Edhi Foundation told APP that Bilquis Edhi was named the most influential person in the first two decades of the 21st century in a domino effect verdict announced by Impact Hallmarks on Friday.
Bilquis is a professional nurse who runs the Bilquis Edhi Foundation. Abdul Sattar Edhi proposed to her and they were married in April 1966. She has spent more than six years serving humanity in need. To date, her charity has saved over 42,000 unwanted babies by placing ‘jhoolas’ [cradles] in Edhi homes and centres across the country.

“Today, Bilquise and I were in her ward weeping. She cried for Edhi sb and I cried for her. You are so bad! When she called me first lady, I went from ‘Edhi’s Bilquise’ twitching,” Termina wrote.
PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal retweeted Tehmina’s post and prayed for her speedy recovery.
In another post, she said: “When Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif paid tribute to Mazar, the founder of the country, I went with Saba and Saad Eddi to Abdul Sattar Eddie salutes for his lifelong dedication to al-Qaeda’s realization of Pakistan’s dream: a social welfare state. Indication r on his tombstone.”
