If you follow the career of Kevin Samuels, who describes himself as an “image consultant”, you know that he has built a huge following over the past 2 years by giving dating advice. The message often denigrates women, and some of his most famous YouTube videos are “How Much Do You Cost to Submit?” and “Modern Women Are Average at Best?”. “Why don’t you get married?” Obviously, all you need to play the role of a relationship expert is a fancy suit and glasses. Earlier this year, he received Future’s final co-signature – which should tell you everything you need to know.
Samuels sparked controversy last week when he said unmarried women aged 35 were considered “leftover women.” In the video circulating on social media, he walks over to his soapbox and spit out this misogynistic remark: “If you live to 35 and you’re not married, you’re a leftover. You’re leftover. . Men know you may have a problem. Whether you want to hear it or not, I’ll go with you. I’m telling you the truth you don’t want to hear.”

Samuels himself is 56, twice divorced, and currently single, but somehow he — and all men — are excluded from this logic. Despite data showing that single and childless women are the happiest segment of the population, the self-proclaimed influencer still expresses his deep-seated contempt for us. Statements like these reinforce the sexist belief that we alone carry the burden and stigma of being single. Not to mention, black women are often reminded of the discriminatory nature of modern dating.

We are the least connected people on dating apps, and for years we have been bombarded with statistics claiming we are also the least likely group to marry. Samuels didn’t just exploit the hysteria that a woman’s greatest fear is being single — he amplified it. For black women, his words were even more vitriolic. In the same video, he speaks directly to women:
“The thing is – when you’re 22 to 25 and you don’t want to settle down – you try to get the CEO, the pilot, the investment banker, if you’re one of them.” Women over 35 want one A man with the same standard of living, then you have to share him. “
Samuels are: 1) shaming us for not getting married until a certain age, 2) implying that we are gold diggers, 3) advising us to engage in unhealthy relationships that are only good for men. Black women are being abused at an alarming rate in this country, often in the form of domestic violence. Coming forward, rather than something safer – like staying single until you find the right partner – makes his words not only stupid, but dangerous.
It’s no secret that our culture likes to nurture dating gurus from men who display a touch of contempt for women. However, Samuel’s way of thinking isn’t just about disliking you or thinking like a man. It fuels low self-esteem in women and makes them more vulnerable to harmful encounters. Yes, he’s been called up before for his dastardly antics.
