Bowen Yang hosted the Emmys in place of Kenan Thompson. During his appearance, he made a joke about the 2022 Oscars that sparked controversy. Anyone attending the event was prepared for anything— including possible interruptions— thanks to the precautions taken by organizers.
During the ceremony on September 12, 2019, Violet Yang — age 31 — jokingly warned 44-year-old Maya Thompson about the pitfalls of hosting an award show. Yang told Thompson that something as simple as not being able to open her dressing room door or disappearing like a Max show on HBO could happen.
The 57-year-old actor claimed he was alluding to when Will Smith interrupted a joke made by host Chris Rock about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s alopecia. Rock had just started telling the joke when Smith walked on stage and smacked him in the face. The 50-year-old actress was likened to G.I. Jane because of her shaved head due to alopecia.
The Academy announced that Smith would be banned from attending events for the next 10 years as a consequence of his behavior during his altercation.
Smith earned the Best Actor award for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard. During his acceptance speech, Smith showed great emotion.

Yang’s reference to the Academy Awards drama between Rock and Smith was the only mention of the subject. Even Thompson avoided talking about the subject in his opening monologue.

On Monday, a source told Us Weekly that production staff members jokingly warned the audience at the Emmys at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The source said that stage workers threatened to give attendees a severe beating if they tried to rush the stage. In addition, attendees were told that the back bar was just for show and that speeches should last for no more than 45 seconds.
