Bijoy Khandheria dead and obituary, President, served as the Medical Director

Bijoy K. Khandheria was the 16th President of ASE. He worked as Medical Director of Aurora Global and Executive Health Program Services since 2010, as Medical Director of the Echocardiography Center for Research & Innovation since 2012 and as Medical Director of Echocardiography Services at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center since 2013. Prior to this, he was Clinical Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine, Milwaukee since 2011. Before moving to Milwaukee and Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, he served in many noteworthy positions at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona and Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Khandheria received his MBBS and MD from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. Additionally, he received his MS in Pre-Medicine prior to attending Shree Sayaji General Hospital in Vadodara, Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital in India. After completing these residencies, Dr. Khandheria joined Saint Agnes Medical Center — a hospital in Philadelphia, PA — as a Cardiovascular Diseases & Internal Medicine specialist. He later attended a fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester for the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases & Internal Medicine.

Khandheria co-authored over 350 publications, including industry- and federal-funded research projects that lasted multiple years. He was the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on many of these projects, which led to many published findings. Khandheria received two patents in the US for “Method For Assessing Vascular Disease By Quantitatively Measuring Vaso Vasorum” and “Method For Imaging Intracavitary Blood Flow Patterns.” Since 2013, Khandheria has been senior consulting editor and a trusted guest editor for the Journal of American Society of Echocardiography. He also edited three books about echocardiography, including the first two editions of ASE’s Comprehensive Echocardiography textbook. Khandheria has reviewed for several online and print medical journals, including the Journal of Echocardiography, JACC CV Imaging, JACC and other titles. Additionally, he was a lead author on all three editions of ASE’s textbook.

Dr. Khandheria was a long-time ASE member, and he served on many committees and task forces throughout his career. He helped establish ASE’s educational course portfolio and was the co-director of ASE’s State-of-the-Art Echocardiography course from 1995 to 2020. Dr. Khandheria was also the program chair of ASE’s 2001 Scientific Sessions in Seattle, Washington. In 2006, he became the first Indian American president of ASE. He led the charge with Dr. Randy Martin to rebrand ASE and change its tagline from the Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound to Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound. They also created a new logo for ASE. Khandheria helped expand ASE’s visibility on the world stage by creating ties with India. These ties still exist today and Khandheria was an advocate for sonographers in the organization. He worked on the Board of Directors of CoA-ACS, which is ASE’s committee on accreditation. During his time on the board, he championed sonographers’ roles in research and teaching.
