House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday defended his decision to allow conservative TV host Tucker Carlson to access approximately 40,000 hours of security footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. , he told reporters that this would soon become a reality. It has been widely publicized that his office is taking action to address concerns about security risks.

“The media seems jealous,” McCarthy said in a one-on-one interview with The Washington Post. “It’s funny because everyone in the media has an exclusive right to certain things.

“People like scoops, and Tucker is the one who demands it,” McCarthy said, describing Carlson’s journalistic style as “opinion” rather than news. “So I asked him to come in and take a look, but everyone would understand.”

McCarthy has avoided repeated questions from reporters about his agreement with Carlson since the Fox News host revealed last week that his team had access to security footage. Several media organizations, including The Washington Post, wrote to McCarthy requesting the same access and expressing concern that “ideology-based narratives of already polarizing events will become ingrained in the public consciousness.”

Democrats condemned McCarthy’s decision to share the video with Carlson, who has repeatedly downplayed the deadly violence during the Jan. 6 attack. They also worry that widespread access to the footage could pose a security risk because the locations of cameras inside the Capitol could be exposed.

McCarthy downplayed those concerns on Tuesday, saying Carlson had made clear he did not want to add footage documenting exit routes from the U.S. Capitol. McCarthy added that he was in talks with the United States about releasing the video. The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) dismissed concerns that Carlson would mislead viewers about the day’s events. A USCP spokesman would not confirm McCarthy’s claim that he or Carlson’s team requested a security review of any footage that might be used in its show.
